EDITOR’S NOTE: The Eureka Springs Times-Echo sent a series of questions to the two candidates running for city clerk treasurer in the Nov. 3 election. The race is between Aaron Borey, a member of the parks and recreation commission, and Michael Carey. Answers were edited only for clarity.
The following are Aaron Borey's answers:
• TIMES-ECHO: What led to your decision to run for city clerk treasurer?
• BOREY: I have served as a commissioner for parks and recreation for the past couple years and have enjoyed helping our community and the many accomplishments we have achieved. I wanted to extend that service by getting more involved, and the city clerk position provides that exact opportunity.
• TIMES-ECHO: What qualifications do you have that you feel will make you effective in that role?
• BOREY: I have a bachelor’s degree in business management and am a business owner in downtown Eureka Springs. I am extremely organized, dedicated and reliable, which is necessary for this role as it is the “custodian of records” for all municipal laws and ordinances, as well as holds the responsibility for maintaining a regular and accurate journal of all city council proceedings.
• TIMES-ECHO: If elected, what changes do you feel are needed to make the city clerk treasurer office more efficient?
• BOREY: This position was recently divided from a full-time role into two part-time positions with clearly defined responsibilities. At this time, I do not foresee any changes are required for efficiency, simply a dedication to getting things completed timely and accurately.
• TIMES-ECHO: How long have you lived in Eureka Springs? Please share a little about your background.
• BOREY: I have lived in Eureka Springs for over four years now. I was in a corporate sales role for more than 25 years, but now own a shop downtown called Beyond the Yonder, which I’ve had for the past three years.
• TIMES-ECHO: How would you describe Eureka Springs in just a few words?
• BOREY: A wonderful, diverse, friendly, tourist town tucked away in the Ozark Mountains. A place that I am proud to call home.
• TIMES-ECHO: How would you describe the importance of the city clerk treasurer position?
• BOREY: The most important part is the dedication to keep accurate records and journals for all city council meetings, in a transparent and concise manner. This elected position supports our city council and their duties, while providing clear communication and information to our residents.
• TIMES-ECHO: : Why should residents vote for you over the other candidate?
• BOREY: I feel I have proven my ability and dedication to Eureka Springs with my work serving as a commissioner and secretary for parks and recreation. I have never missed a workshop or meeting during that time. Coupled with my education, training and knowledge, I will bring that same approach and commitment to this role.
• TIMES-ECHO: What else would you like to add to help voters be more informed about your candidacy?
• BOREY: I am always available for thoughtful discussion and connection with the voters in our community. I did not make the decision to run for this position lightly. I chose to have conversations with current and past city employees, as well as many community members. I understand the requirements and will dedicate the time and commitment required to proudly fulfill this role. Thank you!
