Events planned across county to honor veterans

Several events are planned in Carroll County in observance of Veterans Day on Saturday, Nov. 11, including a parade in downtown Berryville at 2 p.m. that day.

The parade is a joint effort of American Legion Post 9 in Eureka Springs, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the nonprofit organization RECON- VI.

“We’ve got some floats coming,” said Post 9 commander Tom Mischo. “Police are going to be there. The fire department is coming in and a bunch of veterans groups. The Daughters of the American Revolution are going to be there. American Legion riders are coming, and some Blue Knights, too. The Army’s going to bring a truck and I think the Air Force is coming.”

On Friday, Nov. 10, Equity Bank’s Berryville branch and RECON-VI will hold their quarterly event honoring local veterans at 11 a.m. at the bank.

From 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, Montgomery- Whiteley Realty will host a luncheon for veterans at Towering Oaks Church, 1159 Highway 62 West in Berryville.

Schools in Eureka Springs and across Carroll County will have events beginning Friday, Nov. 10, to recognize Veterans Day.

Eureka Springs High School’s FFA students will host a breakfast for local veterans and their families at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10, in the high school cafeteria.

Students will serve the breakfast, which will include eggs, pancakes, Blue & Gold sausage and bacon, fruit and more.

“I just want to take a minute to recognize all who have served our great nation and the families of those service members as well,” ESHS principal David Gilmore wrote in an email to all district staff and high school students. “They have all sacrificed much to keep our freedoms in place as well as the protection of our nation.”

Gilmore’s email said all high school students or employees of the district are welcome to invite a veteran in their family and all employees who are veterans are also welcome.

“It will be our honor to serve those that have served our great nation,” Gilmore wrote.
