The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, the Berryville Community Center and the Arkansas Attorney General’s Office will host a free presentation titled: “Raising Awareness of Common Scams and Internet Safety” at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at the community center at 601 Dr. Spurlin Circle in Berryville.
“We strongly encourage all members of the public to attend, especially seniors, who are often the preferred targets of these scams. If you know of an elderly friend, neighbor, or family member, please invite them to join us,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
The presentation will be led by Isaac Jimenez, assistant director of public events and training at the Arkansas Attorney General’s Office. Jimenez is a graduate of Hendrix College in Conway with a degree in sociology and regularly gives educational talks across the state on scam awareness and internet safety.
The sheriff’s office has recently seen an increase in reports from citizens who have fallen victim to telephone and internet scams, the release said.
“In most of these cases, the suspects are believed to be operating from overseas and are outside of our jurisdiction for prosecution,” the sheriff’s office said in the news release. “Our best line of defense is education — by informing the public about the different types of scams currently circulating, we can help prevent future victims.”
