Carroll County authorities are seeking donations to help pay for specialized DNA analysis on human remains discovered last year in Eureka Springs.
According to a news release from the sheriff’s office, an individual walking along their property in rural Eureka Springs discovered human remains on Dec. 11, 2024.
The remains were sent to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory, where it was determined that there was a high probability of being able to develop a DNA profile; however, the crime lab was unable to perform the specific procedure necessary to extract the DNA, and the remains were subsequently transferred to Othram, a private laboratory in Houston, Texas, for further analysis.
Carroll County Sheriff Daniel Klatt, Carroll County Prosecuting Attorney Tony Rogers and Carroll County Coroner David Slaton, in conjunction with Othram, have announced a multi-agency cooperative effort with the goal of identifying the remains of “Inspiration Doe.”
“No person should go unidentified; their name lost to time and history, if it can be helped,” Klatt said in the news release.
“We will work diligently and with dedication with our partners in the Sheriff’s Office, Coroner’s Office and Othram to identify the remains of ‘Inspiration Doe,’ and if foul play is involved, bring those involved to justice,” Rogers said in the news release.
Othram has begun work on extracting the DNA from the remains; however, this procedure is specialized and rare.
“The partnership with Othram is unique in that no taxpayer dollars have been expended on this effort,” Klatt said in the news release. “Othram assists agencies in funding these efforts through crowdfunding, recognizing that most agencies utilizing their services cannot afford $7,500 in a single expenditure.”
“The prosecutor’s office is assisting in this effort by using a civil forfeiture fund that is available,” Rogers added.
