James “Tuba Jim” White of Eureka Springs, Arkansas was born June 26, 1947, in Belleville, Kansas to Lawrence and Mary (Jeardoe) White. James passed away January 25, 2026, in Eureka Springs at the age of 78.
James proudly served in the United States Air Force for 21 years, including a tour in Vietnam. His dedication to his country shaped much of his life, and he carried the discipline, loyalty, and quiet strength of his military years into everything he did afterward. His service was a point of deep pride for him and for those who loved him.
During his 21 years in the United States Air Force, including his service in Vietnam, James was part of a pioneering team whose work helped develop the Doppler radar technology that is still used today to track and predict the weather. It was a contribution rooted in innovation, teamwork, and a deep commitment to protecting others, a legacy that continues to serve communities across the country every single day.
James was also a passionate supporter of the arts, pouring his time and talent into the Eureka Springs School of the Arts and performing with the Holiday Island Theater Group. His love for music made him a familiar and beloved presence in Eureka Springs parades, where he proudly played the tuba, often becoming one of the most memorable sights along the route.
A master woodcarver, James shared his craft generously. He taught classes at Silver Dollar City, inspiring countless students with his skill, patience, and joy for working with his hands. His artistry wasn’t just a hobby; it was a legacy he passed on to others.
He is survived by son, Kevin White and wife Dena; grandchildren, Dylan, Ambrose and wife Denise; four great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; brother, John; sisters, Beth and Suzy; five nieces.
James is preceded in death by his wife, Carol Jean Mooney.
