Mayor continues recovery from illness

Eureka Springs Mayor Butch Berry remains in recovery mode after suffering an undisclosed illness that originally left him in intensive care for a number of days.

City council member Steve Holifield, who is also the city’s mayor pro tem, confirmed Tuesday, Feb. 17, that Berry had recently been moved from Northwest Medical Center to the hospital’s rehabilitation facility to continue his treatment.

“Mary Berry was released from NWMC and was transferred to NWMC Rehab last Friday (Feb. 13) and is expected to remain there for two weeks,” Holifield said via email.

Berry’s initial diagnosis hospitalized him the first week of February, including a number of days in ICU, Holifield originally confirmed.

At the city council meeting held Monday, Feb. 9, the mayor pro tem gave an update on the mayor’s status.

“Butch has been out with an illness,” Holifield said at the time. “An update that we got says he’s been moved to a private room, a regular room, so hopefully he’s on the mend.

“Please send all your positive thoughts and prayers toward him and his family. We keep them in our heart, and get well soon, Butch.”

Berry had been in the hospital until his transfer to the in-patient rehab.

Holifield confirmed he will lead the council’s next meeting, scheduled for Monday, Feb. 23.

“I will chair the City Council Meeting again on the 23rd,” he said.

Berry has been mayor of Eureka Springs since 2015. He has not confirmed whether he intends to seek a fourth term in November’s general election.

Holifield has announced his candidacy for mayor.
