The body of a missing Carroll County teen was found Tuesday, Oct. 14, near Hawksbill Crag, the Newton County Sheriff’s Office said.
According to a news release, Newton County Sheriff Glenn Wheeler said his office received information that some hikers at Hawksbill Crag had found what they believed to be a body below the bluff line. Newton County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, North Arkansas Regional Medical Center EMS, Mennonite Disaster Service, Harrison Fire Department, Newton County Coroner’s Office and 14th Judicial Drug Task Force responded to the area.
Earlier in the day Carroll County Sheriff’s Office had put out an alert in reference to a missing/runaway juvenile. The alert included a description and tag number of the vehicle the 16-year-old girl was driving. That vehicle was discovered to be at the trailhead parking lot, according to the news release.
Law enforcement officers worked their way down to the body and discovered the victim fit the description of the missing girl, according to the news release and her identity was later confirmed.
The Newton County Sheriff’s Office, Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Newton County Coroner’s Office and Arkansas State Police are continuing the investigation. The girl’s body has been sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office at the Arkansas State Crime Lab for autopsy. No foul play is suspected in the death.
“This is a heartwrenching situation and all the agencies involved will work together to try and get some definitive answers for the family, but it appears there is no foul play and, at this point, no one else is believed to be involved,” Wheeler said in the news release.
Because the victim is a juvenile, her name was not released by authorities.
