Safe To Be launches 2nd LGBTQ+ housing project

Safe To Be, a local non-profit dedicated to providing safe, stable housing for romantic and gender diverse (commonly known as LGBTQ+) individuals facing housing insecurity, announces the construction of its second dedicated housing unit. This milestone builds on the organization’s proven housing model and reflects continued momentum toward long-term, community- centered solutions.

Building on Real Impact

Founded in 2018 by co-founders Ethan and David Avanzino, Safe To Be was created to address the lack of affirming housing for individuals displaced or rejected due to their gender identity or sexual orientation. The organization has funded its work through grassroots community efforts including drag shows, comedy nights, and craft sales.

Safe To Be’s first home, completed in 2024, has successfully housed one individual, demonstrating the organization’s ability to move from vision to tangible, life-changing impact.

A New Two-in-One Housing Model The second home represents an evolution in Safe To Be’s approach. The new build will feature a redesigned floor plan with two distinct living spaces. A finished basement apartment will serve as short-term emergency housing, while the primary living space above will function as long-term, stable housing. This dual-use design allows Safe To Be to respond quickly to crisis situations while continuing to offer permanency and stability.

The project is being developed in partnership with ECHO Village, a unique housing development centered on small, affordable homes and shared community spaces that foster connection and mutual support.

Community Fundraising and Support To support construction of the second home, Safe To Be is actively fundraising through community events and direct giving. An upcoming fundraiser includes a performance by Adam Mac during Spring Diversity Weekend, hosted by Out In Eureka. Ticket sales from this event will be split between Safe To Be and Out In Eureka, directly benefiting both organizations’ missions. Tickets can be purchased at https://tinyurl. com/AdamMacES Safe To Be also currently has an active Givebutter fundraising campaign dedicated to the second home project. Looking Ahead

As housing insecurity continues to disproportionately impact LGBTQ+ individuals, Safe To Be remains committed to expanding access to affirming housing that prioritizes safety, dignity, and long-term stability.
