Dinner theater musical to benefit The Purple Flower

The Purple Flower, a nonprofit resource and support center for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking, announces a February musical dinner theater fundraiser featuring the musical comedy “I Do! I Do!: A Musical About Marriage” Feb. 19-22 at Upstairs at the Grotto in Eureka Springs.

“I Do! I Do!” is a Tony Award-winning musical comedy first produced on Broadway in 1966 by David Merrick starring Mary Martin and Robert Preston (originally directed by Gower Champion, book and lyrics by Tom Jones, music by Harvey Schmidt). It is based on the Jan de Hartog play “The Fourposter” which had 560 performances and won numerous awards.

Local director Gene Flake will direct this musical, and the cast includes Berryville actress Juli Tapken starring as Agness and Eureka Springs actor Justin Robins starring as George. The musical tells the story of Agnes and George’s marriage from their wedding night to 35 years later, depicting healthy relationship dynamics with a light-hearted flair — a welcome contrast to toxic cycles of domestic violence.

The play will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, through Saturday, Feb. 21, with a matinee performance at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22. Ticket prices will be $79 per evening and $69 for the matinee. Ticket prices will include gourmet dinner prepared by Grotto Wood-Fired Grill and Wine Cave. Special rates will be available for VIP group table reservations. A very limited number of non-dinner tickets at $25 will also be available.

“I Do! I Do!” is presented through special arrangement with Music Theater International (MTI) and all authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. This production is licensed through MTI and made possible in part by sponsorship from the Eureka Springs City Advertising and Promotional Commission.
