Body recovered after Holiday Island fire

A man’s body was recovered after a house fire on Friday, Feb. 13, in Holiday Island, according to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office did not release the man’s identity in a news release about the fire.

According to the release, the county dispatch center received a report of a residential structure fire in Holiday Island. The Holiday Island Fire Department was immediately dispatched to the scene, with mutual aid from the Eureka Springs Fire Department and the Eagle Rock-Golden-Mano Fire Protection District, the news release says.

CCSO deputy Micah Gash, who is assigned to the City of Holiday Island, became aware of the house fire and responded as well, according to the sheriff’s office.

“Deputy Gash was first on scene and became aware of an individual and a cat still trapped inside the residence,” the release says. “The Deputy and a family member of the resident both attempted to gain access to the burning house to rescue the entrapped person and the cat. Deputy Gash was successful in gaining entry into the home but was immediately forced back due to heavy smoke and flames.

“Unfortunately, despite the rescue attempt of our deputy and the Holiday Island Fire Department, an adult male was found deceased inside the home by Holiday Island Firefighters. The cat was located after the fire was under control, and CPR was performed by Deputy Gash, but it was beyond resuscitation as well.”

The news release says the cause and origin of the fire were undetermined after a joint investigation by the Holiday Island Fire Department and CCSO Criminal Investigations Division.

The sheriff’s office said there is no threat to the community, and the investigation is ongoing.

Gash sustained minor burns to her hands but refused care at the scene and has since returned to work, the release says.

“The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office expresses its condolences to the family of the deceased and its thanks to the firefighters who responded to the call for service,” the release says.
